Dear Parents:

This is a relatively quiet week at school. Just a reminder- next Monday is Labor Day and there will be no school. Enjoy your long weekend and I actually did look at the weather forecast (after awakening to all the rain on Sunday) and it is supposed to be sunny that weekend! I do believe that the students are getting into the routine of school and all that it requires. Those students who were caught off guard and earned MAZE tickets are mostly doing what they need to do NOT to get another ticket. Please remember, if you have any questions or concerns, call or email me at school and I will get back to you as soon as I am able.

Sincerely:
Anne Peirce

THIS WEEK

Language: This week the students will complete the first unit in language. They will review on Tuesday and have their first major assessment on Wednesday. This unit included information on types of sentences, subjects, predicates, fragments and run on sentences. Because most of this information is review, I expect the students to do well on this assessment. The students will also write about a family tradition this week. This writing will consist of only one, lengthy paragraph. The focus of this is to not only share traditions but to practice writing using topic sentences, supporting sentences, and concluding sentences. These paragraphs will be illustrated following the type of art found in our reading selection this week.

Reading: The genre for this week's reading is Folk Tales. Students will read about sharing customs and how reading these folk tales allow us a glimpse into the cultures where the stories evolved. Several students will begin reading a novel and participating in a literature circle. The first novel they will read is Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen, a popular author for this age group. This is a very well written novel and will allow the students many opportunities to reflect on life and life lessons. There will be a reading assessment on Friday for both groups. We have almost completed reading The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. We have been using this book to learn how to complete the reading responses the students will be responsible for completing on their own. This should begin this week. Another aspect to our reading program is book projects. Students will receive information about the book project expectations Monday. The book project is due on September 30. We will, as a class, mark in the agendas- suggested dates for book project milestones to be completed.

Spelling: The focus of this week's spelling lesson is R controlled graphs and digraphs. The students will continue to use a Tree Map to classify their words according to graphs and parts of speech. The quiz will be on Friday.

Social Studies: This week the students will learn about the lifestyles of several of the earliest civilizations. They will learn about how some of these civilization assimilated customs from others, the types of foods they ate and the difference between the Old Stone Age and the New Stone Age. In cooperative groups, students will prepare and present posters on the history of some of the earliest, cultivated foods known to mankind. The assessment for chapter one will be at the beginning of next week.

Character Ed: We will have one more FISH activity this week and then will move onto the character trait for September, citizenship. Students will be given a list of actions and will need to decide if and where they fit on the FISH continuum.
