Art Programs

Artist in Residence

Artist in Residence is an artist the PTA sponsors to instruct six art sessions for each class. The Artist in Residence can be in the field of Theater, Music, or Visual Arts. Our current Artist in Residence, Cathy Johnson, is a visual artist who teaches the students a new art technique and artist. The motto of the artist in residence is "Art for Everyone". The students study artists who are connected to Louisiana. The fourth grade students attend the first nine weeks, the fifth grade students attend the second nine weeks, and the sixth grade students work with the artist the third nine weeks.

Celebration of the Arts

Celebration of the Arts happens when the art is displayed from the six sessions of the Artist in Residence program. All of the art instructors at MMS showcase the progress of the students. Other programs that participate in the Celebration of the Arts are Talented Theater, Talented Art, Talented Music, and Violin.

Art Fiesta

Art Fiesta is a day of art for all of Mandeville Middle School. Students attend two assemblies of local performers. They participate in visual art, theater, dance, or music instructed by dedicated, talented educators. Local visual artists present their art to students. Then, students apply similar techniques to their own artwork. Students participate in a school-wide visual art project. The theme for Art Fiesta is "Louisiana and Beyone" to introduce students to artists locally and nationally known who are from Louisiana or have experienced the uniqueness of Louisiana.

Discipline Based Arts Education (DBAE)

DBAE is a program where students explore a classic piece of art and are asked to explore it, research it, critique it, and produce something original like it from what was learned from researching the art work. This program involves visual learners, auditory learners, and kinesthetic learners. The students use all of their senses while learning. The lessons are created to motivate students and help them apply what they have learned to academic subject areas.
