Mandeville
Middle School has its own broadcast every Monday morning, the WMMS broadcast.
Sixth graders can apply for the job of director, camera operator, news anchor,
host of the Seagull Report, or meteorologist in the fall and spring. The
director plans productions, ensures that the broadcast team follows script, checks
camera angles before shooting, clues part of production, and praises and constructively
critiques others. They also ensure that production is broadcast when scheduled,
communicate with the principal about the question of the week, and assist sponsor
with editing. The
camera operator is responsible for proper care of equipment, prepares camera,
has opening shot ready, and follows broadcast according to script. They also prepare
photo essay on current topics of interest of MMS students and assist sponsor with
editing. The
news anchor seeks and writes news stories of interest to MMS students, types broadcast
scripts onto teleprompter, and presents news on camera. The
host of the Seagull Report writes and presents news story on the class of the
week. They also seek guests to interview on topics of interest to MMS students
and prepare and present "The Question of the Week". Another
job is the meteorologist. The meteorologist stays aware of the local weather and
plans and uses creative ways to present the weather by using props, costumes,
maps, etc. The meteorologist also shares forecasted weather for the week on camera
and presents weather facts and/or may answer weather questions from viewers.
On
the WMMS Broadcast, there are two shows: WMMS Channel 88 News and The Seagull
Report. On WMMS Channel 88 News, there are usually two news anchors. They tell
the events that are going on through-out the school. Also the meteorologist tells
the weather in a fun way. The
second show, The Seagull Report, shows the class of the week. Each class of the
week shows what they have been doing in class or they tell about recent holiday
or events. They also say the pledge for that week and may pick up trash in our
playground, if needed. Also,
on The Seagull Report, they say the Question of the Week. The Question of the
Week is usually a math-related question. Kids send in their answer to the broadcast
studio where the host of the Seagull Report randomly selects the answer and that
person, if right, will win a prize. Each
week, the Broadcast Team works on the program during the last hour of the day
2-3 days a week. They prepare, produce, and then edit the show. Students work
very hard each week to make the show a success! Written
